Scott Weis specializes in the representation of small and medium-sized businesses engaged in the development and licensing of software, providing technology services, and manufacturing and reselling goods. Mr. Weis approaches the practice of transactional law in a highly pragmatic way, where the benefits of closing are always weighed against the corresponding costs of time and expense. Technical skill in drafting and practical skill in negotiating provides Mr. Weis's clients with effective and efficient representation. His clients and counterparties would describe him as an aggressive negotiator.

Mr. Weis's background in commercial litigation and appeals, often involving issues of contractual or statutory interpretation, enhance his ability to closely interpret poorly drafted or ambiguous contractual language, and to proactively draft to avoid such problems. Mr. Weis's experience with the litigation aspects of commercial contracts has strongly influenced his approach to drafting contracts, determining when circumstances call for clarity, and when something less than clear benefits his client.

Mr. Weis began practicing transactional law in Silicon Valley during the dot-com boom, when deals moved quickly and the success of clients depended on vigorous advocacy, properly drafted contracts and a dedication to the timely resolution of matters. As an example, in his first year of transactional practice Mr. Weis negotiated, drafted and closed a series of related contracts with one of the world's largest retailers resulting in over $40 million of revenue to his client.

Most recently, Mr. Weis served as General Counsel to a NASDAQ technology company. He previously practiced for six years in the legal department of the world's largest provider of smart-card solutions. Prior to that he worked in litigation and civil appeals at the Santa Barbara firm of Hatch & Parent and at the Santa Monica litigation boutique, O'Neill, Lysaght & Sun. While at Hatch & Parent, Mr. Weis obtained a seven-figure settlement in a high profile case. Mr. Weis also obtained a complete reversal by the California Court of Appeal in a matter where the sole issue on appeal was the meaning of a single word in a contract.

In 1994 Mr. Weis received his J.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles, School of Law. In 1990 he received his B.A., with highest honors, from the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Mr. Weis is a member of the California and Oregon bars.
